I’m 15 and we just moved to the South. Do adults expect to hear yes sir or yes ma’am when being answered?
If so, when do you expect it for SURE? Any examples of when i should?
Thanks if you can help, April
While there’s no hard fast rule for saying “yes ma’am” and “no ma’am”, it IS good manners. 🙂
Instead of replying with a simple “yeah” or “okay”, try adding “yes ma’am” or “yes sir”.
For example: if an elderly friend from church asks if your family is enjoying your new home, a Yes, ma’am, we are sounds much better than Yeah, it’s great. Addressing adults as “ma’am” or “sir” simply sounds more respectful and indicates that the individual has your full attention.
It may sound a bit formal at first, but with practice you’ll be saying it without even thinking!
Hope this helps!
Okay, ladies, any suggestions? What is your rule of thumb for teaching your children and teenagers when speaking to adults?
