Life has changed drastically in the past two weeks, hasn’t it?
The coronavirus pandemic has us all
scrambling wanting to take the best care of ourselves and our loved ones.
But where do we even start?
If you’re wondering what practical, healthy steps you can take in the midst of all the panic and fear, I think I have something helpful for you today.
—> But, first- two essential things:
What this post IS about: The steps my family is taking- in addition to staying home and social distancing– in order to keep our bodies strong and healthy.
What this post is NOT about: a sure-fire why to avoid catching the coronavirus, or to cure yourself if you should catch it.
Please, please do your own research and make educated choices regarding your personal health and the health of your kids; this includes contacting your primary care giver or going to the ER if you, or someone in your family, is dealing with acute illness.
What I’m going to share with you in this post is my general anti-viral protocol and, above all, common sense habits that we should all be practicing anyway.

The supplements mentioned in this post are ones I keep in my medicine cabinet year-round, but reach for more often during the cold and flu season.
Here’s the bottom line:
Health is a lifestyle, not just an oil to apply or a pill to swallow when there’s a virus threat.
I hope this is a lifestyle we all can internalize. A global virus pandemic definitely makes us move in that direction, doesn’t it?
And, for the record, I am not a health practitioner. I can’t diagnose or give medical advice.
But I am a natural-living woman who loves to share what I’m learning; read with discretion and make your own educated choices.

Kristy’s personal anti-viral protocol: the “Big Guns”
First off, I’m going to talk about the “big guns.”
These are the immune boosters that stimulate our systems to attack and kill invaders (like viruses).
My holistic practitioner advised against over-stimulating the body’s immunity with too many supplements, too often.
With that in mind, we are supplementing with the following on an alternating basis:
That means, we take each of these supplements a few times each week, but not every day.
My go to vitamin C product for years has been the powdered supplement, Emergen-C (our favorite flavor is orange!).
I’ve noticed that this product has been out of stock a lot on Amazon; thankfully, I’ve been able to find it at our local Super Walmart pharmacy.
On days when we’re supplementing with Vitamin C, I mix an entire packet in a cup of water for myself, and half-a-packet in juice or water for each of my kids.
These chewable vitamin C lozenges, from Beeyoutiful, are a great option, too.
Vitamin C plays a vital role in our body’s ability to absorb calcium, heal wounds, repair tissue and maintain the health of bones and teeth.
Yes, it’s also anti-viral.

I’ve read various reports regarding elderberry (also known as sambuca), especially as it pertains to the novel coronavirus.
After reviewing these facts, I’ve made the decision to continue using elderberry (alternately, with other supplements) for one reason:

Colloidal silver has been in my cold and flu medicine chest for years.

Kristy’s personal anti-viral protocol: the Daily Stuff
Vitamins and minerals
Supporting our bodies with essential vitamins and minerals is important every day of the year. It’s how we lay a foundation for health and well being.
Choosing a high-quality supplement, and taking it consistently, is key.
Five years ago, I discovered Le-vel’s Lifestyle Women’s capsules and I’ve taken them ever since. Best vitamin supplement I’ve ever used.
My kids take the liquid Thrive Kids vitamin and mineral blend, and my husband takes the men’s capsules.
Again, probiotics are something I take on a daily basis.
While it’s true that probiotics are not anti-viral in nature, they are an essential part of maintaining healthy flora in the gut… which will help your body fight off invading pathogens (like viruses).
My go to probiotic powder is the Lifestyle Mix, by Le-vel (the same company I purchase our family’s daily vitamins from).
The perk is that it also contains enzymes, micronutrients, and water soluble minerals.

This is one my chiropractor recommended.
I am currently taking vitamin D3 capsules on a daily basis, and giving my kids a liquid vitamin D3 supplement.

I’m a fan of Eden’s Garden essential oils.
(I also use DoTerra and Young Living products, and honestly don’t have a favorite EO brand- but Eden’s Garden oils are much more affordable).
I’ve been using a humidifier (like this one) in my kids’ bedrooms for weeks, long before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out.
With the onset of the Coronavirus, I’ve switched to the “Fighting Five” blend, which contains the same oils as the popular Thieves blend (lemon, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, and rosemary).
As you can see, I purchased several items from this collection. We are enjoying them all.
We are keeping oregano oil on hand.
Oregano is a natural antibiotic and is active against bacteria, fungi and viruses.
Another way I’ve used it is to add one or two drops (it’s potent! you don’t need much) to a tablespoon of coconut oil, and rub the mixture on the bottom of my kids’ feet. This absorbs into their bodies and acts as a natural antibiotic.

Make sure young kids know how to wash their hands well.
Practicing basic hygiene has huge impact on the health of our country. If you’ve ever visited a third-world nation, then you know exactly how true that is.
Mamas, don’t assume your kids know how to wash their hands properly: teach them!

Drink LOTS of water.
This one seems obvious, but apparently water consumption isn’t as common in the States as we might think.
According to the Quench Survey, nearly 80% of working Americans admit that they probably do not drink enough water. [source]
Make it a habit to drink plenty of fresh water on a daily basis, and limit beverages like sodas, drinks with red dye, energy drinks and sweet tea (I know, I know… we’re in the south).
Drinking lots of water is an important habit for adults and kids alike, and for good reasons.
Hippocrates was right: disease begins in the gut.
The good news: health begins there too.
Now, I’m not a food purist. But I do try to embrace a whole foods diet as much as possible.
If you find yourself lacking in this area, now is a great time to start making changes.
After all, most of us have ample time to meal prep and cook-from-scratch during this quarantine. *wink*

I know, I know: We’re trapped at home right now.
Gyms are closed, we’re encouraged to stay away from public places like parks, and many people live in neighborhoods with tiny yards.
Let me give you a few quick ideas- and a heaping dose of encouragement to not grow sedentary.
- Run! Use a treadmill, jog in place, or hit the side walks of your neighborhood. I’m super blessed to have a half-mile, rural road for my running track; I run a mile several times a week.
- Join a fitness program- I personally have a membership at MIF (MomsIntoFitness.com) and love it.
- Do a workout with your kids. My boys enjoy this one; for MIF members, Lindsey recently shared several workouts just for kids.
- Practice yoga or pilates at home (check out CarolineWilliamsYoga).
- Stay in touch with a friend who will keep you accountable!
Physical exercise isn’t just about physical health; it can also boost your moods, help balance your hormones, and clear out brain fog.

Get outside and enjoy the sunshine.
Here in North Texas, we have been blessed with ample sunshine and spring-like weather. I hope that you are too, wherever in the world you are!
Friends, getting outside is deeply important, especially during this time of quarantine.
Sunshine, nature, and fresh air are not only important for your physical health, but your mental and emotional health as well.
Please don’t give in to the feeling of being “stuck inside.”
A few ideas:
- If weather permits, open the windows. (Read: How to Air Out Your House Properly, by The Fashionable Housewife.)
- Start a small vegetable or flower garden.
- Take a blanket and a book to the back yard and read. (I’ve been doing this a lot lately.)
- Buy some bird feed (no one should be hoarding that) and install a bird feeder in your yard. (Here’s a soda bottle bird feeder kit for under $7. Sounds like a great project to do with the kids.)
- Sit on a swing or lawn chair and bird watch.
- Walk your dog.
- Go star-gazing at night with your kids. (I know, this won’t give you the benefits of sunshine; but it’s still delightful!)
- Go on a nature hunt (we love to do this).
- Take a snack or meal outside and enjoy a picnic.
- Take your kids outside with beach balls, water guns, jump ropes and sidewalk chalk. Have fun!
