My post on Natural Remedies for the Cold and Flu Season has stayed in our top ten posts for several weeks. That tells me you’re doing exactly what I’m doing right now:
Trying really, really hard to keep your family well.
We have so much sickness going through our area this month that I almost hate to venture out of the house with my kids! My preschooler still sucks his thumb a lot, so all I can think about when we’re in a public place are the germs he’s putting right into his mouth!

Whether you live by yourself, or have a houseful of little people (like I do!), I want to share a few ideas for keeping the people under your roof well.
These products won’t necessarily guarantee that you won’t ever get sick. But, I do find that they keep my family healthier and shorten the duration of illness when we do get sick.
I compiled a more detailed list of natural remedies for the cold and flu season HERE.
The following are my top favorite supplements for staying well when the flu virus is going around:
“Boost” from Le-vel.
I love Le-vel’s nutrition products, and this is one of my favorite supplements to take during the fall and winter seasons.
Boost is a powerful “greens beverage” mix containing enzymes, fruit and vegetable blends, herbal formulas, probiotics, Royal Jelly and other nutritional raws.
If you’re looking for a premium grade product to literally boost your immune system this winter, consider ordering a box of Boost and taking a pack (or half-a-pack) on a daily basis. (My husband loves it in a glass of organic orange juice!)
I discovered the power of essential oils a few years ago when I started using the On Guard oil blend from doTerra. I diffuse it in our home every day, or add a few drops in a vaporizer in our children’s bedrooms at night. We’ve had a lot less illness as a result.
I love On Guard from doTerra, but you can also use Thieves essential oil from Young Living or Eucalyptus essential oil from Beeyoutiful. Any of these oils or blends will be effective in killing air born germs and viruses.
Elderberry is held in high regard as a protection against flu virus and as a children’s immunity enhancer. If you want to try your hand at making your own tincture, Bulk Herb Store sells organic dried elderberries and glycerin.
These days, I’m so busy homeschooling and keeping up with my home business and this blog, that I prefer to order my elderberry tincture from Beeyoutiful. The recommended dosage for children is 1 teaspoon as needed for illness or as a preventative.
I’ve used this homeopathic remedy for the flu, and found it works extremely well in shortening the duration. Our homeopath also recommends it as a preventative: place 5 pellets in a cup of water, and sip throughout the day. You can buy Oscillococcinum at Walmart pharmacies for about $16, or order it from Amazon.
If you’re curious about the flu shot, please read 10 Reasons I Don’t Get the Flu Shot from Jill’s Home Remedies, and Have You Taken Your Herbal Flu Shot Yet? from Growing Up Herbal. These are great articles!
Let’s not forget the obvious: get enough sleep, drink lots of pure water, wash your hands a lot, and eat yummy, healthy food!
